Sara Giménez
Head of the Equal Treatment Department
The Gypsy Secretariat Foundation
After graduation from the University of Zaragoza law school in 2000, Ms. Sara Giménez Giménez began her career focusing on two areas of work: her general duties as a lawyer, and defending the right to equality of the Romani people in the Gypsy Secretariat Foundation (FSG). As head of the equality division of this organisation, she coordinates national and European projects related to equal treatment and anti-discrimination issues concerning the Romani community, whose central focuses are on assistance to victims of discrimination, career training of key actors, policy monitoring, policy and institutional action, and social awareness. In addition, she has participated in the defense of the Romani community in the courts; highlighting the case brought to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg of a gypsy woman whose widow’s pension was not recognised, as well as litigation before the Provincial Court of Barcelona of unfair treatment of a Romanian gypsy woman by two Mossos d’Esquadra police officers. At the institutional level, she coordinates the group that assists victims of the Council for the Elimination of Racial or Ethnic Discrimination and the Assistance to Victims of Racial or Ethnic Discrimination Service of said Council. From 2012 to 2014 she served on the advisory group of the Agency for Fundamental Rights of the European Union (FRA), and continues representing the FSG in this forum. She also has extensive experience in training numerous key professional agents in the fight against racial discrimination (prosecutors, police, lawyers, social workers, university staff, etc.).
